Yeah, sorry about this week. Off The Chain moved into its new space on Northern Lights, and our weekly meeting ended up running over into polo time. A bunch of folks ended up heading down late, but it sounds like they may have switched it up to a different garage.
There may be a change in the start time (might drop the ball at 8:30), as there are rumors that OTCC will be meeting on Wednesdays instead of Thursdays.
As to weekend polo, we would like to start up some of that as well. We have had a few very impromptu games on Saturday in the past, and will be able to get a more established date/time/location as more people get involved. It is hard to be the guy with the mallets AND commit to every Saturday night AND have a weekend life outside of polo, so I would like to see more folks with more mallets throwing together games whenever they can.
On that note, there will be a mallet building course (and possibly wheel-cover, bike set-up, etc) taught sometime in the very near future, so that folks can get more into this without being unsure of what to use or how to keep their rides safe. |

Also, another place that I was just pointed to that will be a good spot when the weather is crap but the urge to play is strong ... Wendler Middle School has a covered ice rink out by their track / playground, right there next to the UAA campus near Lake Otis and Northern Lights.
It also sounds like this could be a good winter haunt, too, as they don't flood the rink when things get freezing. Don't think that it has artificial lighting, though. |

Polo last night had a super-low turnout ... Brian, Josh and I rode about with mallets for a couple of hours and had some fun, but it would have been far better if more folks were there.
After we discovered that the tennis courts are now locked up (we would like to talk to the muni parks folks to find out why it is that public parks are currently off-limits to any sort of use - tennis or otherwise), we headed down the street to the Boys & Girls Club off Minnesota and ... 30-something (take a right immediately after the last tennis court when headed southbound on Minnesota around 33rd).
It is a huge court - actually, rink - that makes for some interesting play. It has proper boards all the way around, some decent puddles that make for the equivalent of watery sand traps, and did I say that it was huge? We found a hard rubber ball that we played with, which made for a lot of high-speed sprints to chase it down court as it bounced quite nicely.
So, please folks, let's keep the polo alive. Rain or shine, we will be playing on Wednesdays. Also, Friday evening at 7 you should all show up to the Strip so that we can play some field polo that Brian is trying to set up.
And Josh - you need to send out some of those photos that we took last night. A few of them might be keepers, and we can post them to various interweb sites for much viewing pleasure. |

Okay, I am not going to be lazy - here is where we played. I think that it is red and yellow now, which is much more fun than that boring whiteness. Or maybe I am just remembering things wrong?

Okay, I am mostly done bumping this thread with updates on bike polo. I will be putting up occasional stuff and new news / class announcements / photos / tournament details / etc, but feel that an infinite number of pages on bike polo in Anchorage is not necessarily warranted in this forum. Just enough to keep the thread alive, perhaps. So, here goes:
Check out www.anchoragehardcourt.com for details about the polo scene in Anchorage. While it will focus mostly around hardcourt polo, I will be throwing up regular details about the Friday Field Polo stuff that we have going on, Monday Fundays, etc.
Current outline of polo schedule / activities / fun events is as follows:
-Monday Funday, Valley of the Moon Park, 7 PM. Will have various fun games, polo possibly included, with food and drink provided and shared potluck style. Bring what you can (food, games, drinks), stay as long as you can. We will do this every Monday, weather permitting.
-Humpday Hardcourt, locations vary, meetup at 8:00 start game at 8:30 on Wednesdays. We typically meet by 8 at Off the Chain (814 Northern Lights Blvd) and then ride to the selected court. Lately we have been favoring the tennis courts at 33rd and Minnesota, or the Boys and Girls Club hockey rink off of 36th (also near Minnesota). We have mallets and a ball, all you need is a bike (and even there we might be able to cover you).
-Friday Field Polo, West End of the Strip (somewhere around 10th an P, typically), start around 7:30/8 (sometimes earlier) on Fridays. Big field, lots of riding, lots of fun. We have bats to use, occasionally will bring out the mallets if people are interested. |

Does the game marco polo have anything to do with the Italian man marco polo? in history we're learning about china and how Marco Polo went from Italy to China and discovered China's advancements. And i was wondering does the game Marco Polo that you play in the pool have any kind of relation with the man Marco Polo? (Please say sources) Thanks so much!

alenaxx - sorry if we have not been a valuable resource for illuminating the many connections between Italian men with funny names and what is known as a fact to be The Best Game In The World. If you still need us to provide you with some sort of summary of the complex history and relationship between Marco Polo and the game we play, please let me know.
We will craft up a top-notch (though perhaps not 100% academically accurate to the "modern mind") factual report for you. Please be sure to properly cite your sources. If you need help with APA or MLA formatting to ensure proper referencing of our materials, please contact your regional Google expert. |

Bike Polo is happening once more!
The urge has been strong to throw together some regular games now that days are getting longer and winter boredom is well upon us. We ride and play to stay sane!
We will be meeting up at 7PM at Off The Chain. We will hang out for a bit, let stragglers show up, and discuss the general rules (don't worry, there aren't many). We will ride out at 7:30PM and will likely be headed downtown to either 5th and G or 9th and K, depending on which court is most welcoming to us.
We may have a couple of loaner bikes available for people that are worried about playing polo on their commuters and carbon fiber racers, so don't worry. We will also have mallets.
And don't worry, this will be a fairly tame restart to polo season - we are inviting anyone and everyone to show up, no experience needed. It is a good chance to see how the game works and get a feel for the fun times that will be had well into the summer months.
If you have questions, please feel free to call me at two-oh-six-six-six-nine-three-eight-one-four. |

| Oops, meant to say that we are meeting up at 7, leaving around 7:15. You can meet us downtown if you would like. Feel free to give me a call to figure out where we are, should you be running a bit late. |

I should be eating my Wheaties or drinking Ginko-whatever ... my brain seems to be behind the ball today. Perhaps I should include the time AND date for this whole polo fun event thing.
What: Bike Polo, the Revival
When: Thursday, January 28th.
Yeah, but When?: Meet up at 7PM at OTCC, ride out at 7:15.
Where: Meeting at OTCC (814 W. Northern Lights), playing downtown.
How: With style!
Why: Because it will make your mother love you more. |
